Kids Less Fit Than Thier Parents

A recent article on USAToday.com, found that kids are less fit than their parents were.  "World Health Organization numbers suggest that 80 percent of young people globally may not be getting enough exercise."  This is just crazy, but not shocking.  Kids just don't move like they used to. Back in the day, Mom said to go outside and I'll call you at dinner.  We played all the time. All day long.  Now, kids are locked into their electronic devices and would rather sit and play video games rather than get out an be active.  But is it their fault?  I think not.  More on that in a minute.

A few more points in the article stated that:
  •  Kids take 90 seconds longer to run a mile than their counterparts did 30 years ago
  • 1 in 3 U.S. kids get recommended 60 minutes of moderately vigorous activity a day
  • Today's kids are about 15 percent less fit than their parents were
Behaviors are created with our kids when they are very young.  My girls are 7, 5 and 3.  At this point in their lives they don't have a choice.  Mom makes dinner and they eat whatever it is.  We CHOOSE not to eat McDonalds or other crappy foods.  Same goes for electronics.  We have computers and iPads at home, but we limit the accessibility. We aren't perfect, but we create choices for our kids so when they are old enough to make their own decisions, we create good habits.

At MVP, we've created opportunities for not only our Adults, but more importantly our Kids.  Kids need to run, jump, climb, sprint, pick up heavy objects.  They just need to be active.

Kids Fit

It is our job as adults to give our kids the opportunity to be active and healthy.
